Arriving at the New York premiere of her new film The Hours, Nicole Kidman had good reason to smile, as many are predicting that she'll pick up an Oscar for her performance in the film. Directed by Stephen Daldry of Billy Elliot fame, it swept the board at the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday.

The actress plays a youthful Virginia Woolf in the movie, battling her personal demons as she works on what was to become her first great novel. Mrs Dalloway. Her story is mirrored in the lives of two other women, played by Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, who live in different times but are struggling with the same issues.

Streep is already a two-time Oscar-winner, while Moore is considered a strong contender for her work on Far From Heaven.

Nicole is almost unrecognisable in the film, looking downtrodden and worn out, with messy brown hair and a fake nose. Needless to say, she was back to her glamorous self when she arrived at the premiere.

"Virginia Woolf seemed to come to me at a time when I really needed her," said the Hawaii-born star. "She gave me a gift in a certain sense, because I very much needed to play her."
