In a case of life imitating art, Chicago co-stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger are going head-to-head for the same award. In the film they play two murderesses locked in bitter rivalry, but now they've both been nominated for a Golden Globe in the best musical or comedy actress category.
The Globes are generally seen as an indicator for who will find success at the Oscars in the spring. And if the pattern of previous years holds true, it bodes well for Britain.
While Chicago led the field with eight nominations, Stephen Daldry's new film The Hours came in second with seven, including best director and best actress for Nicole Kidman's portrayal of Virginia Woolf.
Sir Michael Caine has also been nominated, for best dramatic actor. He faces some stiff competition, however, from Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs Of New York), Leonardo DiCaprio (Catch Me If You Can), Jack Nicholson (About Schmidt) and Adrien Brody (The Pianist). In the best actress category, Nicole Kidman goes up against Meryl Streep, Salma Hayek and Julianne Moore.
Hugh Grant has meanwhile received a best comedy actor nod for About A Boy, but it was a disappointing evening for Harry Potter fans, as the The Chamber of Secrets didn't receive a single nomination.
Other British hopefuls include Albert Finney, Vanessa Redgrave, Jim Broadbent, Helen Mirren and Sir Michael Gambon. Vying for the prestigious best film gong are Gangs Of New York, Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, The Hours, About Schmidt and The Pianist.
