George Clooney has proven he's more than just a pretty face after his directorial debut, Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind, won the best film gong at the Las Vegas Critics Awards.

The film follows the story of game-show producer Chuck Barris who claims to have worked as a hit-man for the CIA when he wasn't tied up with light entertainment. George also stars in the caper, along with Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore.

The second Lord of the Rings film was the big winner of the night, however, with four gongs, including one for director Peter Jackson.

While the awards were being handed out in Nevada, London film critics were announcing the nominations for their own annual prize-giving ceremony. Mike Leigh's All Or Nothing led the way, getting the nod in the best British film category while Leigh himself was nominated for both best British screenplay and best British director.

Also up for an award in the UK is Sir Michael Caine for best actor with his acclaimed performance in The Quiet American. He will be facing some stiff competition at the February 12 ceremony, however, with Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson also nominated for Insomnia and About Schmidt respectively.

In the female category Halle Berry looks set to add another gong to her collection, for her Oscar-winning performance in Monster's Ball, while Hugh Grant, Ralph Fiennes and newcomer Chiwetel Ejiofor will battle it out for best British actor.
