SEAN NARROWLY DEFEATS PIERCE IN BATTLE OF THE BONDS

A Scotsman and an Irishman have been slugging it out for the title of England's most-loved secret agent. After thousands of you voted in the hellomagazine.com poll to determine the best ever Bond, Pierce Brosnan and Sean Connery left Londoner Roger Moore and Welshman Timothy Dalton in the shade.

It was Sir Sean who eventually took the top spot, however, despite a valiant effort from the Irish country boy. Pierce stayed neck and neck with his Scottish counterpart right up until the finish line.

The inimitable Mr Connery won the hearts of 36 per cent of our readers, but Pierce was hot on his heels with 34 per cent of the vote. Timothy Dalton meanwhile took third place with 19 per cent while the only English contender, Roger Moore, fared surprisingly poorly. Only ten per cent of you felt Stockwell-born Roger was most convincing as the quintessentially English spy. It was a disappointing result for the actor, who is usually considered one of the most successful portrayers of 007.

As for George Lazenby, it would seem he is remembered only as the most forgettable 007. It was a case of "you only live once" for the Australian actor, whose career floundered after his only Bond outing, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, was panned by critics and cinema-goers alike.

The inimitable Mr Connery is still the deadliest 007, though Pierce Brosnan has proven a worthier adversary than any previous Bond
