Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis were met by over 2,000 screaming fans as they arrived for the London premiere of their new film Gangs Of New York.
Leo, who admitted he was taken aback by the number of people who turned out, stopped for a while to chat with members of the public. "It's pretty intense out there," he said afterwards. "This has been the biggest crowd so far, we didn't get that in Paris or Berlin."
The film's legendary director Martin Scorsese was likewise pleased by the reception. The epic story, set in 19th-century New York, has been a pet project of his since the Seventies and he was enthusiastic in his praise of the cast, which also features Cameron Diaz and British actor Jim Broadbent. "They're all incredible together," he said. "The thing is about these people, they didn't perform in this picture, they inhabited it, they lived it."
Daniel, who plays vicious gangster "Bill The Butcher" was named best actor by the New York Film Critics Circle last month and is being tipped to collect an Oscar for his performance.
The premiere was also attended by Joan Collins, accompanied by her husband Percy Gibson, along with Goldie, Denise Van Outen and Kelly Brook.
