MIX-UP LEAVES MERYL IN OSCAR GONG PERIL

Veteran actress Meryl Streep has apparently missed out on the chance to win two Screen Actors Guild awards, thanks to a clerical error.

A simple mistake at Sony's Columbia Pictures resulted in Meryl being ignored when the SAG nominations were announced. Her name was accidentally put forward for best actress, instead of supporting actress, for the film Adaptation. This meant that she was competing against herself, as she was also in the running for The Hours.

It is believed that her vote was therefore split, and she ended up losing support for both performances. "A low-level employee incorrectly put her forward for best actress," admitted a Sony spokesman.

The SAGs are regarded as the strongest indicators as to who will win at the forthcoming Academy Awards, so the error may exact a heavy price. "It had to have cost her two nominations," said Hours producer Scott Rudin.

The same mistake was made last year when Jennifer Connelly was wrongly put forward for best actress for her role in A Beautiful Mind. She went on to win best supporting actress at the Oscars, however, so Meryl may yet add to her existing tally of two gongs and 12 nominations.

Meryl will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Connelly, who last year won a best supporting actress Oscar despite an identical bungle at the SAG
