After losing out to her Chicago co-star Renee Zellweger at the Golden Globes, Catherine Zeta-Jones has been honoured closer to home at the Evening Standard British Film Awards.

Catherine won the best actress gong for her portrayal of murderess Velma Kelly in the all-singing, all-dancing film. The Welsh star, who is seven months' pregnant, was unable to attend the ceremony herself, but there was no shortage of A-list names present.

Supermodel Heidi Klum presented the best actor award to newcomer Chiwetel Ejiofor for his performance in Dirty Pretty Things. After his impressive portrayal of a struggling immigrant in London, the actor looks sure to become the next big thing. Stephen Frear's gritty film also took the best movie award.

The best comedy prize meanwhile went to Lost In La Mancha, a documentary about Terry Gilliams failed attempt to bring Don Quixote to the screen. Heartthrob Hugh Grant came along to present the award. Harry Potter star Daniel Radclife also worked his magic by presenting the gong for technical achievement to production designer Eve Stewart.

The ceremony, which primarily celebrates British cinema, was also attended by Gillian Anderson, Gina McKee, Jane Asher, Twiggy and Roger Moore.
