Two of Britain's favourite actresses have been speaking out about their contrasting experiences with cosmetic surgery. Vanessa Redgrave's daughter Natasha Richardson says she is very happy with her new nose, but Men Behaving Badly star Leslie Ash has only regrets after her lip enlargement operation.

Natasha said having the procedure to reduce her nose was key to her success as an actress. The 39-year-old revealed that during her early career, casting directors said she would be forever limited to character roles unless she did something about her profile.

"I'd never considered changing my nose," said the actress. "It was just part of me and any issues I had about myself were to do with my weight. So I asked my mum and she said 'Don't be silly, darling, look at Barbra Streisand.'

"I thought 'Bloody hell – I'm no Barbra Streisand!'. Then I asked my dad and he said 'Oh, I'm so pleased you mentioned it, darling. I've been meaning to say something for some time'."

While Natasha seems to be most satisfied with her op, fellow actress Leslie has been the victim of endless tabloid jabs over her enlarged lips. "I've had hate mail, asking 'What the hell have you done to yourself?'. It's really hurtful," she said.

The actress admitted she was deeply offended by the comments, some of them made by former friends, about her change of look. Leslie says she has a list "as long as my arm" of people she won't be talking to again. The 43-year-old is now having corrective surgery to get her original slim-lipped beauty back.
