Nicole Kidman has been expressing her gratitude for all things British after securing an Oscar nomination for her performance in The Hours. "It's all down to you Brits," said the star after hearing her portrayal of London-born novelist Virginia Woolf was in the running for best actress.

The Australian was clearly delighted at receiving the news, though her parents weren't quite as impressed when she phoned to let them know. It was 1am in Sydney when Nicole made the call from her hotel in London, and her father refused to wake her mum. "He told me to call back at a decent hour," admits the 35-year-old. "Typical of my mum and dad, it keeps your feet on the ground." She also had to wait to tell her two children, who are currently in New Zealand with their father, Tom Cruise. The Hours will be Britain's strongest contender at next month's ceremony, with nine nominations in total. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter David Hare are both amongst the nominees.

Nicole, who has been visiting London to promote the film, has also revealed that she feels smitten by city, complete with its dreadful weather. "I love the people, and the humour," she said. "And the grey skies and rain. I have so many British friends, I really want to get my own place here. I have so many things to do and share."
