Antipodean heart-throb Russell Crowe has made a public statement to congratulate his friend Nicole Kidman on her Oscar victory.
"Nicole's dedication, brilliance, resilience and generosity have been lauded, applauded and finally handsomely rewarded. I couldn't be happier for her, her family, her pets, everyone. It won't be her last – she's the new Hepburn," he said.
Legendary filmmaker Roman Polanski has also spoken out about his own Oscar win. The reclusive artist took the best director gong for his Holocaust epic The Pianist. "I am deeply touched to have received the Oscar for a film which recounts events that are so close to my own personal experience," he said.
The film follows the story of Warsaw Ghetto survivor Wladyslaw Szpilman. Roman himself was held in the Krakow Ghetto while his mother died in a Nazi concentration camp.
"I thank the members of the Academy for this magnificent award," said the 69-year-old, adding that "art can transcend pain". His lead actor, Adrien Brody, took home the best actor award for his portrayal of Szpilman.
