Having children is expensive these days, but it's even more costly if you're a major Hollywood star. Movie funnyman Jim Carrey is facing legal action from his ex-wife, who says their daughter's £6,400 monthly allowance isn't enough. Melissa Wormer, who was divorced from Jim in 1995, says the figure has become insufficient.

"Jane's needs have changed during the past seven years and the current amount of child support is not enough to enable me to meet her needs," said a statement from Melissa.

The 15-year-old spends every second weekend with her father, and her mum says she enjoys a far more luxurious existence with him than she can at home.

Court papers filed in Los Angeles claim the actor earned £30 million in 2000. He enjoys the services of a private chef, bodyguards, a masseuse and a butler at his extravagant LA home, which boasts a gym, tennis court and a private cinema. Jim recently bought the neighbouring property so as to expand the grounds and he also owns a £6.5 million mansion in Malibu.

Melissa meanwhile lives in a "modest" house without a pool or gym. She wants child-support payments to be increased to £210,000 a year.
