The young actress who charmed audiences in the film Bend It Like Beckham has won a part in US hospital drama ER. Leicester-born Parminder Nagra looks set for big things as she has also just finished shooting Ella Enchanted with Minnie Driver and Patrick Bergin.

The 27-year-old, who rejected an arranged marriage in order to become an actress, says she is determined to make her mark. "I want to break the glass ceiling," says the British beauty. "There's more to second-generation Asians than cultural conflict. I'm delighted. I've always loved the program and will be going out to shoot the next series in August."

Her Bend It Like Beckham co-star Keira Knightley is meanwhile playing the love interest in Johnny Depp's latest adventure Pirates Of The Caribbean. She can count on the swashbuckling support of her compatriot Orlando Bloom in that film.

And it seems Mr Beckham himself may also be venturing abroad for work. Rumours that the Manchester United star will soon move to Madrid have been fuelled after his wife Victoria attended a gala evening in New York.

Asked by reporters if she and David would be heading for Spain, she said "I can't possibly answer that," but then gave an enthusiastic nod and a smile.
