Oscar winner Al Pacino has landed the top spot in a poll of the greatest film stars of all time.
The Serpico actor outranked cinema legends including Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Humphrey Bogart and Marlon Brando to snag the number one post in the Channel 4 countdown. Fellow New Yorker Robert DeNiro, who starred with Pacino in The Godfather Part II and 1995's Heat, came in at number two.
While Welsh-born Anthony Hopkins was the highest scoring UK star at number eight, he was followed closely by Scots Sean Connery and Ewan McGregor, who was the youngest star in the top ten.
Audrey Hepburn had the honour of the highest-ranking actress at number 13, followed by Sigourney Weaver, the only other woman in the top twenty.
The list was heavily dominated by contemporary stars – Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Leo DiCaprio made the top 100, but legendary actors Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier and Alec Guinness were absent.
More than 25,000 votes were cast in the poll, which was held on the Channel 4 website.
