Jim Carrey has managed to provoke a spiritual awakening, albeit one of a rather unwelcome nature, amongst American telephone users. For the comic's new film, Bruce Almighty, has inspired thousands of movie-fans to call God, on the phone.

In the flick God tries to contact Jim's character by leaving a number on his pager. Unfortunately, the film's makers forgot to use the 555 prefix usually employed for movie phone numbers. Instead, they displayed a random seven-digit number, and now movie-goers all around America have been calling it and asking for the man upstairs.

"What am I to do?" demanded Florida artist Dawn Jenkins, who has been receiving 15-20 calls an hour from people hoping for a natter with the heavenly father. The number also matches a plethora of other businesses and residences around the US, which have the same phone number but different area codes.

"My receptionist is going crazy," said Colorado radio boss Ron Nickel. One of the callers to his talk radio network demanded: "Since you're God, if you can name all 31 flavours of Haagen-Dazs ice cream, I'll give you $31,000." Mr Nickel also revealed that while most of the calls have been from mischievous jokers, some have been from genuine believers seeking guidance in their personal affairs.
