Universal Studios are launching a worldwide hunt for a new child star. They need a young actor to play Alexander The Great in a new film of his life. Leonardo DiCaprio has already signed up to play Alexander as an adult and Nicole Kidman will be appearing as the Macedonian king's mother.

Director Baz Luhrman says Alexander's relationship with his mum is crucial to the story, so the role will be a huge opportunity for some lucky youngster. "My way into the film is through Alexander the child and the mother-father-child triangle," explained Baz. "It also helps us to have empathy for the older Alexander if we can understand what happened in his childhood to make him the way he was."

The production team is therefore launching a massive search for a talented nine-year-old to take on the role. "We're doing a Harry Potter and we'll be looking far and wide," said Baz. "He's got to have equestrian expertise – that's very important – and once we've got the boy we'll be looking for children to play his friends." Of course, the budding thesp will also have to resemble Leonardo.

Any young actors who think they have the right stuff should send submissions, along with a colour headshot and details such as weight, height and birthday to: Universal Pictures, Features Casting Department, Untitled Alexander The Great Project, 100 Universal City Plaza, Building 2160/8A, Universal City, California 91608, USA.
