Sadie Frost has begun divorce proceedings against her actor husband Jude Law, citing "unreasonable behaviour". The news came just hours after police were called to a domestic disturbance at the pair's £2 million home in North London.

"I have come very reluctantly to the conclusion that my marriage to Jude is over," said the 37-year-old. "We have agreed that a divorce is the only way forward but we have equally agreed that we will do everything in our power to make certain this is as painless a process as possible for the benefit of our children. They are our number one priority and always have been and will remain so."

Jude and Sadie have three children together, Rafferty, seven, Iris, three, and nine-month-old Rudy. Sadie also has a son from her first marriage to Spandau Ballet star Gary Kemp.

The couple split earlier in the year after five years of marriage. Jude strenuously denied tabloid rumours that he had an affair with his Cold Mountain co-star Nicole Kidman, but efforts to save their relationship floundered nonetheless.

Sources close to the pair say their difficulties first began after an incident last October when Iris swallowed an ecstasy tablet. The child was under Sadie's supervision at the time and Jude was said to be deeply upset. A few months later the actress was hospitalised after a reported suicide attempt and Jude moved out of the family home.

It remains unclear whether there will be a custody battle over their three children, though both parties say they want to make the process "as painlesss as possible"
