Gangsters are no match for politicians, it seems, after Tony Soprano and his friends lost out to their White House adversaries at the Emmy Awards. The West Wing took home the prestigious best drama gong for a fourth consecutive year, leaving the New Jersey mobsters feeling distinctly downhearted.
The Sopranos' stars didn't go home empty-handed, however, as James Gandolfini and Edie Falco were named best actor and actress in a drama. "It's bittersweet," said James. "My work has been acknowledged, and it's time everyone else's work should be acknowledged."
Britain's Dame Maggie Smith was also among the winners, after she took the gong for best actress in a mini-series or TV movie. The 69-year-old was honoured for her portrayal of a novelist who survives a terrorist bombing in My House In Umbria.
Debra Messing, meanwhile, could barely contain her excitement after winning best comedy actress for her role in Will And Grace. "It's so shocking and so amazing," enthused the actress. "It's something I never imagined for myself. This is otherworldly. I've never allowed myself to dream this far."
There were also some surprise disappointments, as hotly-tipped shows like CSI and 24 lost out. Six Feet Under which led the nominations with 16 nods, also went home empty-handed, as did Sex And The City, which had 13.
