Australian beauty Nicole Kidman set the flashbulbs blazing in Manhattan on Monday when she turned out for the screening of Dogville at the New York film festival.
She declined to answer questions about her rumoured romance with rocker Lenny Kravitz, saying the relationship was too important to be discussed in public. But there was no disguising the fact she was in buoyant mood, as she talked about her fashion preferences with reporters.
"I'm lucky, I just have access to pretty dresses," she said. "I’m wearing gardenias a lot lately because they remind me of Christmas. In Australia, Christmastime is in summer, and that smell means Christmas to me."
Her jubilant humour was in contrast to the subject-matter of the film, which has been hailed as a masterpiece by critics. In the flick she plays a fugitive who finds herself humiliated and enslaved by the inhabitants of a small town.
Directed by legendary Danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier, Dogville was filmed on an empty soundstage, leaving the actors total freedom for dramatic expression.
"It's the idea of having no sets and no props, and trying to find the truth simply like that," explained Nicole. She was joined at the screening by her co-stars Lauren Bacall and old friend Chloe Sevigny.
