Orlando helps fete Britain's best indie films

Heart-throb Orlando Bloom was among the presenters at Tuesday's British Independent Film Awards, handing over the UK personality award to his Lord Of The Rings co-star Sir Ian McKellen.

Orlando, who will be seen in the third instalment of the blockbuster fantasy trilogy next month, led the roster of celebrities – including John Hurt, Natascha McElhone and Samantha Morton – on hand to celebrate the best of the Brit indies.

The standout winner of the sixth annual event was the critically acclaimed movie Dirty Pretty Things, which centres around an immigrant working in a London hotel. The movie scooped a total of four gongs – in addition picking up the best film of the year award, filmmaker Stephen Frears also took home the best director award, while star Chiwetel Ejiofor won best actor and writer Steve Knight snagged best screenplay.

Other names reigning triumphant included Heart Of Me star Olivia Williams who won best actress, most promising newcomer Harry Eden and John Hurt, who won The Richard Harris Award. Best Ensemble cast went to the stars of The Magdalene Sisters, while Brazil's City Of God was named best foreign independent film.
