Nicole Kidman admitted to feeling a little overwhelmed by the huge cheer she received at the world premiere of her new film Cold Mountain. Arriving on the red carpet at Los Angeles' National Theatre, the actress was greeted by a deafening roar of applause and a blaze of flashbulbs.
"I try to be calmer but it's hard sometimes," said the 36-year-old. "You feel awkward."
In the film, which was made by legendary British director Anthony Minghella, she plays the sweetheart of a Confederate soldier. English heart-throb Jude Law is the wounded trooper who embarks on a perilous journey back home to be reunited with his lover.
Nicole told reporters at the screening that her risqué love-scene with Jude was intended to portray the strong emotions between their two characters. "It's hard when you talk about something like that because you don't want to sensationalise it," she said. "I hope that it is more than a steamy scene, that it really depicts love."
The movie's other stars, including Renee Zellweger and Natalie Portman, also turned out for the event. And the epic Civil War love story, which is already winning the plaudits of critics, has been tipped for Oscar success next year.
