Charlize Theron brought a splash of glamour to Berlin at the weekend, when she jetted in for the city's film festival. The South African actress was in town to support her acclaimed movie Monster, in which she plays real life serial killer Aileen Wuornos.
Speaking to reporters at the screening, she said it was important that Hollywood didn't only make feelgood movies. "We forget that it's our job is to tell people stories," said the 28-year-old. "There's only so many pretty stories you can do."
The Academy Award nominee, who put on thirty pounds for the film, has already picked up a Golden Globe for her performance and is hotly tipped to win the best actress Oscar. And she was just one of a series of glamorous guests who graced the 54th Berlin Film Festival over the weekend. Among the other big names who turned out were Diane Keaton, Cate Blanchett, Juliette Binoche and Renee Zellweger.
On the other side of the Atlantic, meanwhile, filmmaker Peter Jackson was named winner of the prestigious Directors Guild Of America award. By beating Sofia Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Peter Weir and Gary Ross to the trophy, the New Zealander becomes hot favourite to win the best director Academy Award. In the 56 years of the DGA awards, the main winner has gone on to win the Oscar on all but six occasions.
