Hollywood couple Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith shared a double honour on Monday, with both stage and screen stars picking up accolades at the Drama League's annual Musical Celebration Of Broadway gala in New York.
The Spain-born actor made a splash on Broadway last year in his hit show Nine, while his movie star wife was in the spotlight for her leading role in Chicago as blonde bombshell Roxie Hart. "I first came to this town in 1984 when I was making a Spanish movie," said Antonio of New York. "It is now something very special to be honoured here and by the very people you love."
It was a coast-to-coast string of celebrations for the jet-setting pair, who were out and about in their home base of Los Angeles over the weekend, mingling with Madonna and Elton John at tribute to former Police front man Sting. But after their latest jaunt to NYC, it seems the couple may be looking to swap their sunny LA digs for the Big Apple.
Melanie tells the New York Post that their previous visit was an idyllic one. "We were together just appreciating the day and the city and one another, and we were taking a walk and having lunch and going to the theatre," she says. "And we decided we want a home here."
