In his latest film, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Jim Carrey plays a man so desperate to recover from a broken relationship that he decides to erase the memory of his ex. And the Tinseltown funnyman has revealed that, despite his talent for keeping people in stitches, he knows a thing or two about being heartbroken.
"I knew I'd have to open old wounds with this film," he said in a recent interview. "I've had my share of failed relationships."
The actor's first marriage, to Melissa Womer, came to an end in 1995 after 12 years. He later walked down the aisle with his Dumb And Dumber co-star Lauren Holly, but their union hit the rocks after 11 months. He was also engaged to Renee Zellweger, whom he met on the set of the 1999 flick Me Myself And Irene, but they eventually decided not to go through with the wedding.
"In my time I've done the erasing and I've been erased and it's never a pleasant feeling," says the 42-year-old. "Everyone has someone they'd rather erase. Everybody identifies with that – having had some relationship that hurts so bad they just wish they could make the ghost go away."
Since he and Renee went their separate ways, Jim has been linked with a number of beautiful women. The rubber-faced actor admits that part of him still hopes to find his Miss Right, but he's not so sure that will ever happen: "I guess I want a lifelong love – I just don't think that's real anymore."
