Catherine Zeta-Jones is planning to take on a deadly new role in a film about one of her most infamous countrywomen. The Welsh star is being lined up to play murderess Ruth Ellis, who was the last woman to be hanged in Britain.
The nightclub manageress was sentenced to death in 1955 after being found guilty of gunning down her boyfriend David Blakely. And Hollywood insiders say it is just the type of gritty role Catherine has been hoping for. "She wants to show the world she's a great actress," said one source. "She's seeking out more meaty roles and she'd be perfect to play Ruth Ellis because she is Welsh."
The glamorous star has already picked up a best supporting actress Oscar for her performance in Chicago, but she has yet to win the best actress gong.
Should she manage to bring home the coveted trophy, she has the option of adding it to the mantlepiece at her childhood home. Catherine's parents were planning to sell the four-bedroom house near Swansea where the star grew up, but she and her brother Lyndon have convinced them to take it off the market because it holds too many happy memories.
