Oscar winner Kim Basinger is auctioning off items of jewellery given to her by her former husband, fellow actor Alec Baldwin, and donating the proceeds to an animal charity.
The couple, who split in 2002 after a nine-year marriage, have only recently resolved their custody battle over their eight-year-old daughter Ireland, with Alec being granted equal access to the child. But despite the lengthy and turbulent divorce, there's little indication that Kim's move to offload some of her baubles is anything but a desire to make a hefty charity donation.
The 50-year-old actress has not put her wedding ring on the block, but the Tiffany engagement ring Alec gave her, valued at $30,000-$40,000, is up for grabs. Another gift from Alec now going to auction is a necklace of diamond butterflies featuring aquamarine, citrine and other gems.
"How many women do you know who wear their ex-husband's jewellery after they've divorced?" was the comment made by Kim's spokesperson, who also pointed out that the sale is for a good cause: proceeds will go to the Performing Animal Welfare Society for the upkeep of retired performing lions and tigers.
