Arnold Schwarzenegger has proven that, despite his 56 years, he is still an action hero: the California governor was holidaying with his family in Hawaii last week when he came to the rescue of a man who was in danger of drowning.

The Austrian star was enjoying the sunshine on Maui beach with his children when he spotted the man struggling around 400 yards offshore. "I realized he was having trouble and I asked him if he was in trouble and he said he had cramps all over his body," revealed the politician afterwards.

Arnie quickly seconded a boogie board from another bather and charged through the water to help the stricken man. "I set him on the beach and told him to relax a little because he was so out of shape," he explained. "He told me that for two years he hadn't done any exercise."

It sounds as though the man he rescued was somewhat taken aback by his encounter with the Hollywood star. "Arnold sat with this guy for quite a while as he had cramps, was breathless and a bit shaken-up," revealed one witness. "He was also overawed by having just been rescued by the Terminator."
