Long-running US talk show Larry King Live is more frequently associated with high-brow analysis than glamorous makeovers, but Sharon Stone and Robert Downey Jr both saw fit to reinvent themselves when they appeared on the programme this week. The Casino star, who generally prefers to play it straight, was sporting an effusive curly hairstyle for her chat with the veteran broadcaster. Her new look, which provoked memories of her character in the 1990 sci-fi adventure Total Recall, was more girl-next-door than femme fatale.

Sharon was visiting the CNN studios in Los Angeles to help promote her charity single Come Together Now. The 47-year-old has co-written and produced the track, which features vocals by Celine Dion, Joss Stone, John Legend and Wyclef Jean, in an effort to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Robert Downey Jr was meanwhile showing off a new goatee as he took his seat in front of the cameras. The actor's transformation gave him more than a passing resemblance to silver screen legend Al Pacino. And Robert looks set to join his Oscar-winning peer among the movie industry's elite, as his popularity with the critics shows no sign of abating. Currently winning plaudits for his role in George Clooney's Good Night And Good Luck, the 40-year-old is also being heralded for his turn opposite Val Kilmer in the tongue-in-cheek murder mystery Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.

Robert prefers to take it on the chin when it comes to personal grooming. He needn't worry too much about maintaining a stiff upper lip, though, as his latest big screen efforts have been roundly applauded by the critics
