Tom Cruise's character in the Mission Impossible series is well-practised in using hi-tech gadgetry to keep an eye on people. And it would seem the heart-throb actor shares his onscreen persona's penchant for advanced technology, because he has splashed out on a ultrasound scanning machine to monitor his baby's progress. The 43-year-old, who is expecting his first child with Katie Holmes early next year, has revealed he regularly uses the scanner to check on their unborn child. Speaking in an interview with American chat show host Barbara Walters, Tom admitted to purchasing the $200,000 apparatus, which he intends to donate to a hospital after the tot is born.
He went on to say he could not tell the sex of the baby, but even if he could, he would not reveal it. Asked about the gender of his son or daughter, he affirmed: "I don't know – I just see a little baby."
Tom was also keen to dispel rumours his Scientology faith would prohibit Katie from making any sound during the delivery. "Like anything, you want to be as quiet as possible," he explained. "There have been misinterpretations that the woman can't make any noise, and that's just not true. It's nutty. Just calm and quiet. I want Katie to be as comfortable as possible. And whatever she's going to go through, she's going to go through. And I'm going to be there."
