Tom Cruise's devotion to his bride-to-be Katie Holmes was plain to see when the A-list pair paid a visit to New York this week. The chisel-jawed actor gently ushered his fiancée past photographers waiting outside their hotel as they headed for a charity gala at the Tribeca Rooftop venue on Wednesday night. With one hand around her back and the other holding her arm, the Mission Impossible star seemed anxious to make sure Katie was feeling comfortable and at ease. He needn't have worried, though, as the pregnant actress, who is expecting their first child together early next year, appeared to be taking everything in her stride.
The 26-year-old's bump was clearly visible under the elegant, dark brown dress she had chosen for the evening. And both her and her leading man, who was looking equally sharp in head-to-toe black, were happy to let some real-life heroes take centre stage when they arrived at their destination.
Tom and Katie were in the Big Apple to host a gala fundraiser for New York's emergency workers. The event was staged to raise money for firemen and police officers who were exposed to dangerous materials in the air when they rushed to the scene of the September 11 attacks.
"I started this project out of the great respect I have for the courage and service of the rescue workers," explained the actor. "When I started it I was in a position where I knew I could help. I absolutely consider it an honour and a privilege to be here to help these men and women." It would appear his Midas touch isn't limited to movie making, as $1.6 million was raised by the time the night was out.
