Reese exudes Southern charm in Berlin

Reese Witherspoon almost missed the news of her Oscar nomination because she was asleep. The petite Tinseltown beauty - who'd jetted into Berlin to promote Walk The Line - awoke to be told that her performance in the Johnny Cash biopic had earned her a prized nod in the best actress category. "I was very jet-lagged," she commented.

Posing on a red carpet later in the day in front of the German city's landmark Brandenburg Gate, Louisiana-born Reese was considerably more lively. The effervescent smile and joie de vivre, familiar to fans of her romantic comedies, were once more in evidence, brightening up the chilly, snow-covered setting.

Now the 29-year-old performer, who points out she's been making movies back to back for the last five years, plans to take some time off. While husband Ryan Phillipe is away filming, the Legally Blonde star will be busy holding the fort at home, with family duties ranging from organising the school run for daughter Ava, six, and playing with her two-year-old son Deacon.

And there's also the small matter of her date at the Kodak Theatre in March to see if she's the lucky winner whose name is pulled out of the Academy Award envelope.

The diminutive Hollywood favourite has said preparing for the role, which was a departure from her usual romantic comedies, was "draining". She and co-star Joaquin Phoenix took six months of voice training so they could sing their own songsPhoto: © AFP
