The most breathlessly awaited baby in Hollywood made its grand debut on Tuesday when supercouple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes "joyously welcomed" the arrival of a girl named Suri.

"The child weighed 7lb, 7oz and was 20 inches in length," said a spokesman for the couple. "Both mother and daughter are doing well."

Suri was reportedly born in a Los Angeles hospital, although no other details were given about the birth.

It's the first child for the Batman Begins actress, although her 43-year-old fiancé has two adopted kids, Isabella and Conor, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

According to the couple's statement, their daughter's name, Suri, comes from a Hebrew word, meaning "princess" or the Persian for "red rose". Tom recently revealed he and his fiancée arrived at the name after coming across it in a book. "Friends of ours gave us a book and we just opened it and instantly came up with the name," he said.

The pair plan to wed after the Hollywood heavyweight's other baby is delivered - the third instalment of the Mission: Impossible series which opens in May.

Meanwhile Brooke Shields is also celebrating the birth of her own little bundle of joy. The Blue Lagoon actress and her husband Chris Henchy have become second-time parents to a daughter, whom they've called Grier.

Brooke and Chris already have a daughter Rowan, who turns three next month.
