Julia keeps it casual at New York theatre awards

In keeping with her new role as a Broadway actress Julia Roberts was keeping it low-key when she attended the Drama League awards in New York.

Rather than appear in one of couture choices she's worn over the years, the Pretty Woman star - who was joined at the event by colourfully dresssed former Friend David Schwimmer - chose a loose-fitting floral print frock and a pair of Birkenstock-style shoes.

Her role in the sombre family drama, Three Days Of Rain has been a comeback of sorts for the Hollywood beauty. After two years away from the industry caring for her twins Phinnaeus and Hazel, Julia was ready for a new challenge. Describing her family life as "very fulfilling and interesting", the screen favourite added: "For me to step away from that for any period of time, I was going to have to do something really different.

Although the play has received patchy reviews, the $20-million-per-movie star earned admiration for stepping out of the comfort zone. "There are those who are willing to do theatre and to stretch their wings," commented one US film critic. "And on the New York stage right now, she's queen of the city."

And the 39-year-old also won friends among the ensemble cast with her unstarry attitude - reportedly applying her own stage make-up, eating tuna sandwiches from the local deli and taking curtain calls side-by-side with her co-stars.

David Schwimmer also took an alternative sartorial approach to the event in this checked jacket teamed with brown trousers
