Nicole goes brunette for latest role

Ever since she first hit the big time in Days Of Thunder sporting an impressive flame-coloured mane, Nicole Kidman has been admired for her hair. Over the course of her glittering career the actress has tried out many different styles, though she has almost always stuck to warm blonde or reddish hues, until now.

The Oscar winner has taken on an uncharacteristic brunette hue for her latest film. The as-yet untitled comedy, in which she teams up with Jennifer Jason Leigh, sees her playing an uptight mum who tries - and fails - to enjoy a holiday with her rather less straight-laced sister.

Director Noah Baumbach obviously decided a darker image would best suit Nicole's highly strung character. It's not the first time she has undergone a radical transformation for a movie role, as she adopted a short bob while filming the controversial drama Reincarnation. And who can forget her Academy Award-winning turn in The Hours, when she cast vanity aside and donned a prosthetic nose to become Virginia Woolf?

When asked in a recent interview about her romance with country star Keith Urban, the acclaimed performer said she always considered the future before getting into a relationship. "I'm pretty careful about who I share my life with - I surround myself with truthful, kind people," she explained. "It's the life I want to have when I'm an old woman with long, grey hair." If her appearance on Tuesday afternoon is anything to go by, though, silver locks are not something the 38-year-old needs to worry about just yet.
