After appearing in four movies last year including highly acclaimed cowboy romance Brokeback Mountain, Heath Ledger seems content to stay off the Hollywood highway for a while and simply enjoy family life. The Australian dreamboat is revelling in his latest role as dad to Matilda Rose, his seven-month-old daughter with girlfriend Michelle Williams.

On an outing with his two leading ladies, Heath expertly cradled his baby girl, who was kitted out in a cute pale blue T-shirt with a bear motif and green trousers. "Matilda is adorable, and beautifully observant and wise," says the actor. "Michelle and I love her so much."

Life in the Big Apple also suits the pair right down to ground. Describing their Brooklyn neighbourhood as "the closest thing in America to Europe", the actor enthuses: "The locals are beautiful people. It's like a village."

Meanwhile another celeb dad was spotted out on parental duty in New York. Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman was seen strolling along with his son Cooper Alexander in the city's West Village, where he lives with the boy's mother, costume designer Mimi O'Donnell. The three-year-old, who has inherited his dad's sandy thatch, seemed to have some kind of treat awaiting him at home if the brightly coloured paper bag he was clutching was anything to go by.
