With her mane of jet black hair falling around her shoulders and a figure-hugging red silk gown making the most of her curves, Penelope Cruz was a picture of old-fashioned glamour when photographed on the set of her latest movie. And classic sensuality was undoubtedly the order of the day, as the new film sees her playing Lupe Sino, the woman who captured the heart of Spain's most iconic bullfighter.
In Manolete she appears alongside Oscar-winner Adrien Brody, who takes on the title role of Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez. The legendary figure, who was famous throughout the Spanish-speaking world in the Thirties and Forties, became known as the greatest ever matador before tragically losing his life in the bullring in 1947.
Penelope's appearance in the film will no doubt delight fans in her home country. Those who have followed her career will not be surprised to see her cropping up in smaller-budget productions, however. Despite her success in Hollywood blockbusters like Sahara and Vanilla Sky, she has always remained committed to independent movies.
Just last month the 32-year-old, who was acclaimed by critics the world over for her portrayal of a destitute woman in the Italian drama Non ti muovere, picked up the best actress gong at Cannes for her starring role in Pedro Almodovar's Volver. And she has recently finished work on The Good Night, a UK drama which sees her teaming up with British favourites Martin Freeman and Keith Allen.
