Given that they are regular visitors to St Andrews, there's little doubt about the affection Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones have for the picturesque Scottish town. And it would seem the historic destination harbours equally warm feelings for its A-list guests, after its famous university conferred an honorary degree on the American star.
Nearly 40 years have passed since the actor collected a degree in dramatic art from the University of California, but he was only to happy to don his graduation robes one more time on Wednesday afternoon. The Tinseltown veteran, who was wearing a sharp black lounge suit and white bow tie, had even shaved off the straggly beard he has been sporting for a role in recent weeks.
He and his wife both clapped vigorously as students took to the stage in the Younger Hall, where Prince William was presented with his qualification this time last year, to receive their scrolls. And when the American star's turn came, he clasped university principal Brian Lang's hand warmly before blowing a kiss to the throng of alumni who were applauding him. His glamorous partner, as stunning as ever in figure-hugging black, meanwhile watched proudly from a seat on the balcony.
Michael has visited Scotland on a number of occasions to indulge in his favourite sport, but this latest trip will be the memory he treasures most. "Who knew that after all these years I have been coming up to play golf, I would have this lovely opportunity?" he said. "I always enjoy coming up to St Andrews. It is a treat, a real treat."
