Lucy Liu does some detective work in New York

We're more used to seeing Lucy Liu as a feisty kung-fu fighter, but she gave an altogether different impression in New York this week. Her usually slick style was exchanged for a kooky ensemble of stripy scarf, green slouchy boots, knee-high socks and white retro shades.

Fashion watchers needn't fear, however, as the Charlie's Angels star was in character for the first day of filming her new movie Watching The Detectives. And she looked to be getting into her stride in the new role as she took her on-screen pet, a chocolate-brown Labrador, for a stroll.

The petite 37-year-old plays an unpredictable femme fatale opposite Irish heart-throb Cillian Murphy in the romantic comedy which is due out next year. New York is an especially convenient location for the Big Apple-born star as she has a pad in Greenwich Village. One of Hollywood's busiest beauties, Lucy has recently been on the big screen in Lucky Number Slevin and will next appear in action comedy The Cleaner and supernatural thriller Rise.

Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell, meanwhile, were also on set – busy working on their latest project in North Kensington, London. The untitled production is being directed by 70-year-old Woody Allen who has a long-running love affair with the English capital. Last year's thriller Match Point starring Woody's muse Scarlett Johannson was made there. But it's Brit newcomer Hayley Atwell who gets to star alongside Ewan and Colin in the screen maestro's latest ouevre.
