Tom Hanks might have faced accusations of being a party pooper when he turned up to see wife Rita Wilson receive a uniquely New York tribute at a famous eaterie and promptly pulled a doleful face. But the supportive husband's sad demeanour was all in the name of jest as he entertained the crowd at a party in Rita's honour.

Since time immemorial the proprietors of Sardi's restaurant in Manhattan's theatre district have commissioned caricatures of their famous clients. And on Wednesday, it was the turn of the multi-talented actress to have her likeness committed to the walls of the establishment.

After posing with his other half, the Hollywood hotshot decided to have a bit of fun by imitating the expression of another well-known figure immortalised in Sardi's. Tom, who made his name with a number of comic performances in films like Splash and Dragnet, no doubt, had onlookers in stitches with his antics.

Rita joins luminaries like Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman and Dudley Moore, who passed through the restaurant's doors and were rewarded with one of its iconic pictures. The honour marks her successful Broadway debut as murderous temptress Roxie Hart in hit musical Chicago, which is currently celebrating its tenth anniversary on the New York stage.
