Tom Cruise's character in the Mission: Impossible series prefers to keep a low profile most of the time, but he's only too happy to take centre stage when an emergency arises. And it would seem the action star shares something of secret agent Ethan Hunt's persona, as he has spectacularly stepped back into the limelight after spotting a couple in distress.

New dad Tom was driving home with fiancée Katie Holmes when the glamorous pair witnessed a high-speed car crash just outside LA. Tom immediately stopped his own vehicle and rushed to the scene to make sure the car's driver John Hennignsen and his wife were not seriously injured. The A-list pair then opted to stay with the couple, providing support and reassurance, until the police and an ambulance arrived.

Tom and Katie were returning home from watching their friend David Beckham play an exhibition match with his team Real Madrid when the incident occured. It came after a four-month hiatus from the public eye, as the loved-up twosome have been carefully avoiding media attention ever since their daughter Suri was born in April.

They apparently feel the time is right to return to normal life, though, as they reportedly brought their baby daughter along to a party in Will Smith's house a few weeks ago. And it's not the first time Tom has come to the rescue of someone in need. Back in 1998 he sprang to the defence of a women being mugged in London and two years previously, in 1996, he rushed to the aid of a hit and run victim back home in the US. French newspaper tycoon Jacques Lejeune was likewise rescued by the 5ft 7in star when his yacht caught fire on the Mediterranean that same year.
