X-Man Hugh melts hearts with tender family role

Unlike his fearsome X-Men character Wolverine, Hugh Jackman is a bit of a softie at heart especially when it comes to his family. As the weather turns to spring in Sydney, the Aussie hunk has been taking advantage of the sunshine to hit the beach with his wife Deborra-Lee Furness and their two adopted children, five-year-old Oscar and Ava, one.

Lucky Oscar got a piggyback as father and son romped energetically in the waves. Meanwhile the ladies stayed on the shore, happy to watch the horseplay going on in the surf.

Having described parenthood as a "privilege", the star rarely goes on location without his brood and the family currently constitutes something of a travelling caravan. Hugh and Deborra have just decamped from London, where the 37-year-old actor was filming Woody Allen's Scoop with the New York director's muse of the moment, Scarlett Johansson.

Next year will be spent in the outback when Hugh teams up with his friend Nicole Kidman for an untitled Baz Luhrmann project. Set against the backdrop of the World War II, the film centres around the unlikely pact between an English society lady and the cattle rancher she hires to protect her property from takeover.

But Hugh isn't the family's only screen success story, 46-year-old Deborra is also a renowned actress in her own right. And when she got a starring role in murder mystery Jindabyne opposite Gabriel Byrne and Laura Linney, Hugh happily slipped off the actor's mantle to take up the lion's share of the parental duties.
