There are several decades between them, but screen stars Anne Hathway and Gina Lollobrigida were on equally glamorous form as they stepped out at a glitzy awards bash to celebrate the achievements of Italian Americans.

While 24-year-old The Devil Wears Prada star isn't Italian, her boyfriend Raffaello Follieri is. And Anne was shimmering from top-to-toe in a show-stopping sequined gown as she supported her real estate developer beau who had been awarded a special humanitarian award. "I'm very proud," said Raffaelo of his achievement, adding affectionately, "I'm glad Annie is here with me."

Italian actress Gina was also at Saturday's black tie affair in Washington where she cut a striking figure in a lacy scarlet creation accessorised with sparkling jewels. Once dubbed "the world's most beautiful woman", Gina has certainly lost none of her showbiz aura. The 79-year-old recently announced exclusively to Spanish weekly Hola! that she is to tie the knot with Spanish entrepreneur Javier Rigau, 34 years her junior, whom she has been secretly dating since 1984.

Known as La Lolla in her native country, the actress says: "I have always had a weakness (for) younger men because they are generous and they don't have complexes. Javier, like all Spaniards, is passionate, and I really love that."

Mel Brooks was also among the VIP guests at the gala dinner at the Hilton hotel in Washington. The comedian stepped up to accept an award on behalf of his wife of 41 years Anne Bancroft who passed away last year. Famous for her role in The Graduate, the actress - who was born Anna Maria Italiano - has also been inducted into the Italian American Hall of Fame.
