The weekend turned into a glamorous battle between Hollywood's leading ladies Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Johansson and Eva Longoria as they stepped out for the premieres of their latest movies on both sides of the Atlantic.

Oscar-winner Cate was joined by her handsome leading man Brad Pitt for the Hollywood screening of their film Babel in which they star as an American couple touring Morocco who struggle to find help after she falls victim to an unintentional crime. The Aussie actress, who shimmered on the red carpet in her sensational gold Ralph Lauren dress, stopped to talk to her awe-struck fans but when the crowd let out a huge roar she said: "Oh, Brad must be here."

She had nothing but praise for her handsome co-star, who had flown in from India where he has been keeping Angelina Jolie company, describing him as "a brilliant risk taker as an actor." "It's a testament to his versatility that he is being constantly rediscovered," she added. His ex-fiancée Gwyneth Paltrow agrees, recently revealing the heart-throb's new movie reduced her to tears, "It's the best performance Brad's ever given," she enthused.

Desperate Housewives beauty Eva Longoria has also been proving her versatile talent of late. The gorgeous 31-year-old, who broke into movies with The Sentinel, was celebrating the release of her second silver screen effort, Harsh Times, in LA on Sunday alongside co-star Christian Bale. Across the pond, meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson was re-inventing her trademark Marilyn look at the UK premiere of The Prestige.

The Lost In Translation siren had spent several hours at London's John Freida salon on Saturday for a Fifties-style cut and striking new red hue in place of her trademark peroxide locks for Sunday's glitzy West End affair. Draped in an Amanda Wakely white dress and dripping in Cartier diamonds, she exuded old-school Hollywood glamour from top to toe. Hugh Jackman, who also appears in the flick and accompanied her on the red carpet, admitted he and Michael Caine found it hard to focus when Scarlett was on set.

"The two of us were just mainly distracted the whole time by Scarlett. She's got to be right up there next to my wife," he said. Scarlett, who had to wear a corset for the movie about two rival turn-of-the-century magicians, revealed that while her costume was "sexy" it was also very uncomfortable. "When you wear a corset for 12 hours, you're not feeling as fabulous as when you first put it on," she says.
