Wedding bells could soon be ringing for Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams, after the couple were spotted applying for a marriage licence in New York.

Although the couple have not confirmed wedding plans, speculation is mounting that the in-demand twosome may soon take a trip down the aisle. The Aussie actor and his 26-year-old fiancée, who bought a townhouse together in the New York suburb of Brooklyn at the end of last year, already have a daughter together. "I'm so proud," said Heath after the arrival of Matilda last October. "I just fall deeper and deeper in love with both my girls."

The glamorous duo met while filming the critically aclaimed gay cowboy story Brokeback Mountain. Co-star Jake Gyllenhaal, who is godfather to their daughter, joked about his on-screen romance with Heath, saying "We made out, and they had a baby!". Anne Hathaway, who also starred in the high-profile flick, confirmed Heath and Michelle's bond. "There were sparks immediately. It was adorable."

Since the pair completed Brokeback Mountain they have kept busy. Michelle is currently filming The Tourist alongside Brit star Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman, while Heath is set to play The Joker in the latest Batman offering, The Dark Knight.

However, Heath takes a typically Aussie laid-back view on Hollywood stardom. "I'm incredibly grateful to be a successful actor, and it kind of blows me away sometimes. But it's actually more about waking up and thinking how lucky I am to have this family, right now."
