An emotional Penelope Cruz has paid tribute to her Volver director and great friend Pedro Almodovar after scooping yet another gong to add to this year's already impressive haul of awards.
The Spanish beauty, whose feisty performance as Raimunda in the dark comedy is garnering Oscar buzz, picked up the Best Actress title at the European Film Awards in Warsaw. Wearing a glittering gold gown, the star held back tears as she talked about working with her mentor.
"Pedro, I love you so much," she said. "Thank you for believing in me. You're changing not only my career, but a lot of things in my life."
Prior to Volver Penelope last worked with Pedro - who won the best European Director award - seven years ago on 1999's Todo Sobre Mi Madre. More recently she has concentrated on Hollywood vehicles such as Vanilla Sky and Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Her role in the Spanish director's latest oeuvre has been hailed as a dazzling comeback.
