Tinseltown's finest have been getting plenty of practice at flashing their million dollar smiles as the countdown to the Oscars begins in earnest. A roll-call of Hollywood stars including Calista Flockhart and her beau Harrison Ford, turned out for the Producers Guild of America awards over the weekend where budget flick Little Miss Sunshine won the best picture category.
Golden Globe winner Hugh Laurie, Brokeback Mountain's Jake Gyllenhaal and Ugly Betty producer Salma Hayek also stepped out for the ceremony in Los Angeles. The night, however, belonged to the cast of Little Miss Sunshine, a movie which cost just £4 million to make but has already taken £30 million at the US box office. Its stars include Australian actress Toni Colette and ten-year-old Abigail Breslin.
Until now the hit comedy had been seen as an Oscars outsider. On Saturday evening, however, it beat much more costly films like Babel, Dreamgirls and The Queen, to scoop the best picture title. And its chances of landing the top honour at the Academy awards on February 25 are now looking stronger, as the Producers Guild of America has predicted the best picture Oscar 11 times in the past 17 years. Many of the Guild's members also belong to the Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences, the organisation which awards the Oscars.
