With reports of a romance blossoming between them, Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal were giving nothing away about the status of their relationship as they attended the LA premiere of their latest flick. The pair were careful not to get too close to each other, and studiously avoided looking into each other's eyes when at one point the film's director grabbed them both for a joint photocall.

The screen stars are keeping quiet over speculation that the their friendship, which began when filming Rendition, has developed into something deeper. But whatever the status of the relationship, the fact that Reese's divorce to former husband Ryan Philipe just came into effect last week could very well have something to do with their desire to avoid further conjecture.

Reese plays the wife of a chemical engineer who disappears after boarding a flight from Cape Town in the big screen thriller. She gradually learns that her husband is suspected of being a terrorist, and was taken by the government. Jake meanwhile plays the CIA man charged with overseeing her husband's interrogation.

Due to hit UK cinemas on Oct 19, the film also stars Meryl Streep and Little Miss Sunshine actor Alan Arkin, who took the chance to catch up as they strolled the red carpet.
