British star Kate Winslet has consolidated her Golden Globes triumph earlier this month, by receiving a best actress nod for The Reader.

The Oscar nomination lineup announced on January 22 by Forest Whitaker reveals that Reading-born Kate will be up against Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Frozen River actress Melissa Leo and Meryl Streep.

Battling it out for the best actor title are The Visitor's Richard Jenkins, Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon, Sean Penn for his role as San Francisco's first elected openly gay representative in Milk, Brad Pitt in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and comeback king Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler.

Best picture contenders were named as indie flick Slumdog Millionaire, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk and The Wrestler.

The late Australian actor Heath Ledger appears on the best supporting actor list for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight. Joining him are Josh Brolin for his portrayal of assassin Dan White in Milk, Robert Downey Jr for his comic turn in Tropic Thunder, Doubt's Philip Seymour Hoffman and Michael Shannon for his work in Revolutionary Road.

The ladies named for their supporting role are Doubt stars Amy Adams and Viola Davis, Penelope Cruz for Woody Allen-directed Vicky Cristina Barcelona, American actress and singer Taraji P Henson, who appears in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, and Marisa Tomei for her portrayal of a stripper in The Wrestler.

Leading the field with the most amount of nods overall is The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, which received 13 nominations.
