Michelle Ryan could turn out to be just what the doctor ordered. The former EastEnders and Bionic Woman actress has been chosen to appear as Dr Who's companion in the show's Easter special.

In Planet Of The Dead, an episode to be broadcast on April 1, her character Lady Christina de Souza will be embarking upon a dangerous journey with David Tennant, who continues in the Timelord role until the end of this year.

Executive producer and writer, Russell T Davies said: "The script is being kept strictly under wraps - however we can reveal that Lady Christina is a woman with a mysterious past who's going to have a huge impact on the Doctor."

He stopped short of saying whether that impact would include the coveted role of the time-travelling hero's permanent companion when newcomer Matt Smith takes over the Tardis in 2010.

However, the signing puts Michelle in with a good chance of becoming the Doctor's permanent assistant as the show's bosses often re-use characters who've proved popular with viewers.
