Kiefer Sutherland has been charged with misdemeanour assault after an incident involving a fashion designer at a trendy club in New York.
He voluntarily went to a police station in Manhattan on Thursday following claims he attacked US designer Jack McCollough in the early hours of Tuesday morning at an after party following Monday night's Met Costume Gala.
Details of the incident remain unclear. Mr McCollough, who works for the Proenza Schouler fashion house, alleges he was head-butted after an argument with the 24 star.
Reports in the US have said Kiefer confronted the designer after he bumped into actress Brooke Shields, who's a pal. Representatives for the Lipstick Jungle star said Mr McCullough had done "nothing inappropriate", however. They added: "It's not clear what caused Kiefer to do what he did."
The 42-year-old is due to face the minor charges - which are the equivalent of a parking offence - in court on June 22.
No decision has been made as to whether the charge will affect the star's probation status, received following a drink-driving conviction in Los Angeles last year, says a spokesman for the city of LA's attorney.
If Kiefer is found to be in violation of his probation conditions he could face jail time.
