When the news broke that Mel Gibson's wife Robyn was to divorce the Braveheart star after 28 years of marriage, reports emerged of a new woman in his life, Russian musician Oksana Grigorieva. Claims the singer contributed to the end of Mel's marriage are widely off the mark, says the Oksana's mother.
"He split up with his wife three years ago, so to suggest that she has broken up their marriage is rubbish," Russian concert pianist Lyudmila Chernukha tells US magazine People. "He was no longer with his wife, so he was bound to meet some woman at some point. It just happened to be Oksana."
When Robin filed for divorce in April, citing "irreconcilable differences", she didn't give a date for her split from her husband. Mel did, however, stating they'd been apart since August 2006.
The 53-year-old actor made his first public appearance with his new love at the LA premiere of Wolverine last month. Press reports in the US claim Oksana – who has a son with her actor ex-husband Timothy Dalton - is pregnant with Mel's baby. But the 39-year-old's mum was reluctant to either deny or confirm the stories.
"I can't say anything. Wait for the official statement from them," says retired music teacher Lyudmila, speaking from her home just outside Moscow.
